Giant Squid Dissection

Australian scientists dissect a giant squid that was caught in fishing nets off the coast of the south-eastern state of Victoria.

Scientists began slicing the animal, with tentacles measuring up to 15 metres, in front of a curious crowd at the Museum of Victoria (July 17).

The museum's squid expert Mark Norman conducted a lecture about the creatures, describing how the squid emits a black ink cloud to escape from predators, "like a James Bond smokescreen".

The weight of this squid was 248 kilograms, but there have been reports of squids weighing up to 270 kilograms.
